The Well-Read Shepherds Society

The North American Hill Sheep Show’s Book Club!

Do you have a favorite "sheep book"?

You know, the one that you always grab for, even though you've read it so much the binding is shot and pages are sticking out,

the one that you reference, recommend, and can't imagine your shepherding journey without?

Your eye-opening, always-there-for-you, life-changing sheep book.

Yeah, we've all got 'em.

  • The Well-Read Shepherds Society is a book club for the North American Hill Sheep Show!

One book a year will be chosen to be read beforehand and then discussed as a group while at the show.

It won't be a super long meeting, just a nice "time out" for book- lovers to come together and discuss a couple of their favorite things!

  • For 2026, the chosen book is….

    Counting Sheep

A Celebration of the Pastoral Heritage of Britain

    by Phillip Walling

“There is hardly a sheep-keeping country in the world whose flocks have not benefited from an intermingling of genes from British sheep… Let us celebrate them.”

Whether you are a shepherd, farmer, maker, doer or dreamer, Counting Sheep is full of useful insight into history, culture, and the future. All readers are set to enjoy its richness!

Read through, take notes, and look forward to discussing as a group in September at the next Well-Read Shepherds Society meeting!

  • This “waiting time” until 2026’s show is the perfect opportunity to relax and cozy up with some great books!

Enjoy some sheep stories, or glean some new tips and tricks from knowledgeable shepherds-turned-entertaining-authors, by placing a stack of fleecy reads on your end table for you to grab this winter!
